Matt sometimes says the smartest stuff........ things that have been staring you in the face but you have never done it or thought it....... it takes Matt to casually say ........ things like 'you could shoot from the roof of our building'........what a great idea........ I have hardly ever been on the roof of our building and then never photographed down......... I have shot the Empire state building from up on the top of our place looking up across the roof tops (I often shoot the Empire State out of our window) ......... but weirdly never shot down to the taxis below from the roof..........today I did for the first time..... er.... So why not four years earlier I hear you say? Er...... Not sure other than Matt did not say it till now....... I'll have to get back up there in slightly more dramatic lighting and weather now that its inside my thought horizon....... :-)
You can see the Chelsea Hotel further down 23rd St from up here (top center of frame HOTEL).......... thats a place with a bit of history........... Julia Calfee has shot a book that tries to catch the ambiance of the place........ I don't know her but of her and I know the book thanks to Andrew Parker who although he is in Oslo he actually knows Julia it was him that told me she was living in The Chelsea Hotel....... it seems kind of the wrong way round to be getting this info about Julia from Norway......... seeing as i can see her place from mine hehehe..... but hey thats globalization for you.
Cheers Jez XX
PS....... Happy Valentines Day! Sorry I managed to dive on a train to get to DC and generally zap about without capturing any scenes of romance and love....... er...... sorry....... so here is last years dazzling romance image hehehe :-)
PPS...... I am proud to see that against all the odds Jezblog is listed in the Top 100 blogs in the world by The Sunday Times (UK) ........ what a mighty honor....... wow..... please leave a comment to say hi if you are an ST reader dropping by for the first time...... :-))
Congratulations on making the ST 100 top blogs Jez! Now all you've got to do is make the ST 100 Rich List and you've got it made! I myself haven't given up hope of making the ST Top 100 Up and Coming Premier League Footballers, or forsaking that, the ST Top 100 Guitar Players. There's always hope. [reply]Lee @ February 15, 2009, 4:55 am
Hope springs eternal........ yes to get on the rich list..... that would be cool...... now that would probably require me to invest heavily in lottery tickets...... the odds should be about the same of you getting into the list of the top 100 football players........a double whammy.... hehehe...... here's hoping bro!
Hi- love this photo - reminds me of a Hopper picture. I got here via the ST which shows good taste including you in the top 100 - look forward to some UK shots! [reply]Kirsty @ February 15, 2009, 6:20 am
Hopper?...... that is praise indeed..... thanks so much....... I was in England on Monday...... but was dashing about shooting stuff that can not be featured (yet)..... so next trip for up to date UK stuff......... watch his space!!
Cheers Jez XXXXX[reply]jezblog in DC at the mo @ February 15, 2009, 12:52 pm
I too arrived via the ST, and have to echo the Hopper comment- the rets stop in Florida pic made me think that even before I read the comment! Created a LJ feed for your blog, so I can keep enjoying it - thanks![reply]Jo @ February 15, 2009, 8:28 pm
God Bless the ST, I think your blog has just cartwheeled me round a coinstone in my life...Flo x[reply]Flo @ February 15, 2009, 8:29 am

Cool mate, lucky for you that Matt has his thinking cap on (again!).You and the Sunday Times...wonder what Mr Brooks would make of that............of course I always knew you were destined for greatness.........[reply]PaulS @ February 15, 2009, 11:24 am
THnks Paul... lil ole me... I'm flattered :)
Oy Jez, I need those model release forms!!![reply]Matt @ February 15, 2009, 11:37 am
model release....... bits of paper...... er...... yeah yeah...... never quite so good at all that organization stuff....... I took a pile of model release forms to give to you in Florida...... but miserably failed to give them to you..... can it wait till Im in the big ATL later this week?
Mr Brooks? He would continue to rightly hassle me for not getting to the gym and for still having such poor posture....... hehehe...... Mr Brooks ha..... theres a feared name from the dim and distant past...... did you ever try and stop one of his shots from the penalty spot in a 5-a-side goal?
He gave me the slipper for talking once, the sadistic b@£$%^d. He was the inventor of that great game Brooksyball" though, which I was only very average at.[reply]Lee @ February 15, 2009, 12:15 pm
He was the architypal sadistic PE Teacher in the end I quite liked him but I was terrified of him at first..... funnily enough Steve Grey the Chemistry master told me once that Mr Brooks was by far the most popular teacher in the school by just about any metric they ever applied....... we collectively obviously liked a good thrashing or the fear of one hehehe

I am a first time visitor thanks to the Sunday Times...this visit has been bittersweet though as I've only been to NYC once before and I love it so much that seeing photos of it just make me want to go back so badly! Excellent photo though! You have a new Scottish fan.[reply]Shona @ February 15, 2009, 11:32 am
Thanks Shona........ reading your comment I realize I myself have not been to Scotland for over 7 years...... how has that happened? now I have a yearning to see that amazing Scottish light again
Yes, Sunday Times reader here and logging on for the first time. Loved the photo, am very fond of NYC particularly Park Slope in Brooklyn. Second home! (almost)[reply]Ann Waine @ February 15, 2009, 11:55 am
Love Park Slope have many friends there...... I lived in Brooklyn Heights for a bit that was wonderful too....... Cheers Jez XX[reply]jezblog in DC at the mo @ February 15, 2009, 12:07 pm
Cool blog! I just found it via the Sunday Times. I'll be back...[reply]Sally @ February 15, 2009, 11:59 am
I so agree with what you say about things "that have been staring you in the face but you have never done it or thought it".....I unfortunately have that experience so often. Or maybe there are things that I thought of, but didn't think that someone else would be interested and then suddenly see someone else publish this idea and everyone thinks it's hip. It's very frustrating sometimes. ; ) But I hope that I will catch up with it.....[reply]Annie @ February 15, 2009, 12:14 pm
Hey Annie...... Ages ago....... I shot a photograph of a violent incident in Northern Ireland we printed some images from this set but one that showed the face of a guy who had been killed I did not want put in the set...... it showed his face..... and it had a slightly poor quality vibe to it..... Marc and I discussed it we decided to take it out of the stuff we were sending out...... we certainly never entered it in any awards...... weirdly a couple of months later an image so uncannily similar right down to the poor quality shot by a guy right next to me...... won a major UK press award ...... !!!!!! ..... I still don't think it was a good picture...... but hey what do I know !!
Yes, I see what you mean. It's very difficult to follow your heart, even if your head tells you otherwise. But isn't it so much more satisfying in the end if you get a recognition for something that you thought was the right thing to do at that time, rather than for something that you felt was wrong. Life moves in mysterious ways. = ) I think you've made tha right choice. [reply]Annie @ February 15, 2009, 5:29 pm
Yes thats got to be true thanks ........ Marc and I just laughed..... sometimes I meet bitter photographer types....... I know were they are coming from...... but I think come along now guys we are photographers we have a life of interesting artistry (and piles of hassle) but hey we are artists ...... artisans whose days work is often a privileged look behind the scenes or maybe meeting interesting folks..... its really not right to have a life like this and end up bitter..... because of recognition frustrations or career things...... photographers don't really have careers..... they have photography...... and that is a privileged life in itself........ hehehe..... am I sounding like a hippy?
"Sounding like a Hippy!?" That's not a bad thing to be. They do whole books about them. ; ) And you are right, photography is an artistry. Very tough to get it right. You should see my photographs, they're so lame. *grin* You are very lucky to be able to do what you love. That is very fortunate indeed. [reply]Annie @ February 16, 2009, 4:28 pm
Talking of stuff so right but you do not see it until someone else says it...... Tom Waits..... the perfect accompaniment to some of these NYC street scenes..... cool..... I put a link on the twitter feed at the top so you can now click on and get the growl of Tom Waits poetry and music to further evoke the city.... nice one Ken......
Sorry Ken I was calling you by the wrong name hehehe.... fixed it now mate..... cheers Jez XX[reply]jezblog in DC at the mo @ February 15, 2009, 6:41 pm
