The first edition of a planned magazine in the UK wants to use some B&W pictures I shot in the past........ as part of this Matt has sent me a pile of old B&W images.......... at the same time we have a client that wants images shot in numerous African & Asian cities ....... I would love to go and shoot it all but they want it in a hurry and Im so booked up here in the US and Canada I cannot go........ other Insight guys are going to be shooting all that........ shame....... the assignments are corporate shoots so they are unlikely to produce images like this above ........ and I doubt they are going to be shooting corporate images in Rwanda........ this came back to me as part of the B&W sets the magazine was considering ........
I shot this image back during the terrible slaughter in Rwanda........... it shows refugees who have fled to the border for safety..... when you stop and consider this image....... when I think back to being there........ it makes me consider the struggles in my own life in context..... here this child and his family where running for fear of disgusting terrifying violence......... at the roadside hundreds lay dead....... hunger and disease struck down many who had managed to survive the violence ........ here people struggled the whole time just to stay alive.

I remember when you got back from that trip you were sort of depressed by it and didn't want to edit your stuff..I seem to remember BG & I going through it and picking this one out amongst others...I also remember that it took absolutely ages to get this one right in the darkroom..but woz it wurf it..course it was![reply]Muscley Marcusx @ February 18, 2009, 9:54 am
Yeah........ that was a bit of a grim trip...... the paragraph above does not really sum it up........I remember the mass graves....... people were dying in their thousands....... desperation and fear were constant....... I was working with TP...... in the end he just couldn't go back out there...... it really was like hell on earth...... and even more frightening dangerous and totally depressing to do it on your own...........
Thanks for editing them bro...... this picture is in my view worth looking at again even 10 years later...... this is probably a scan of your amazing artistry in the darkroom baby....... I did nothing to the file..... its a direct scan from the B&W print..... nice one!

I'm a photojournalist mate ... You get to see some stuff... You think you know ... You think you have seen it all ... Then you see this... I was shocked.. Stunned even... Horror on a huge scale ... You are not gonna forget that in a hurry... this image only hints at it all... Most were hard to look at... [reply]jezblog on iPhone @ February 18, 2009, 5:12 pm

This image is amazing. It's so evocative! Last year in October I did a charity expedition to Tanzania, the poverty there was shocking but obviously nothing like the terrible things that were happening in Rwanda, but seeing this sort of reminded me how lucky I am and the feeling I had when travelling through Tanzania.
hey Mariel....... Even for me..... I look at my pictures.......and I remember with a chill some of this stuff...... and I do feel very lucky to live as we do in Western countries.

Hey Jez when you've finished blogging we have some very important work to do... I could tell you that in person since you're only sat 3 feet away, but I don't want to break your concentration... He's currently 1 finger typing in the most intense way :)[reply]Matt @ February 18, 2009, 10:49 pm
