Washington's Continental Army had regrouped on the lawn facing the river to blast the Brits with cannon fire and rifle shot. I did myself the favor of not talking too much and giving away my origins......... hehehehe..........
I heard Washington give a rousing speech to his troops........... I was struck by one sentence the actor spoke........ speaking in realtime as it were........ Washington stated we are literally the only country in the world not to be ruled by a King or Queen or Tsar or a Tsarina........... thats mega when you think about it........ America invented itself with no other similar States to emulate.... with no examples to follow....... An amazing system of government and justice was conceived of........ and brought forth...... and went on to be the model that many others have followed since........ Happy 4th of July!!!!!!!

PS........ Not so impressed by the daylight fireworks....... but they would have been perfect for radio.
They only won because the French helped them out![reply]The Axis of Eiffel @ July 5, 2009, 4:13 am
The French always operate the enemy of my enemy is my friend principle... Principle is the wrong word to describe French foreign policy.. Hehe.... Still they got pissed off with the US once they realized they got ripped off in the louisanna purchase.... Jezblog Dulles Airport @ July 6, 2009, 1:37 am
Hmm. Not really sure they invented the idea of living without a monarch Jez, although they'd like us all to believe it. The Greeks came up with the idea first.[reply]Lee @ July 5, 2009, 6:04 am
Yes even as I wrote that ... I was thinking about some qualifying sentence refering to the Greek city states... And the origins of the concept and the word democracy.... But hey it was gone midnight igot up at 5AM ... Having slept for only 3 hours... My head was wobbling and my lids were closing... Hehehe... It's not too bad that block of text .. Considering.. Hehehe... This blog is often written in the middle of the night.... This leads to appauling spelling and grammer and a wide eyed I'll informed resonance to the whole thing... Hehehe... But that one thing the uniqueness of the American project in terms of contemporary governments did strike me... :-))

Of course the better argument is that John Locke, British philosopher, is responsible for the idea of the modern republic, since the USA is more of a republic in that sense as opposed to the true democracy of the Greeks. That way you guys could claim that the whole idea really originated with the Brits, and the Americans simply stole it from the Brits :-)[reply]Lynda @ July 6, 2009, 8:38 am
Yes...... John Locke's ideas are thought to have influenced the declaration of independence heavily and another Brit whose input to both the US and French revolution is pretty important is Thomas Paine....... Lynda I love that little book by Christopher Hitch about Thomas Paine have you read it?
Wonderful picture. Love the way the smoke is obscuring some of their faces[reply]andrea @ July 5, 2009, 7:56 am
You r right the smoke makes it... I had a fantastic image of the explosion of powder at the moment the gun fired... But the smoke was no where near as good... I went with the smoke pic... But a combination of both would have been mega... :-)[reply]Jezblog Dulles Airport @ July 5, 2009, 7:32 pm

What a curious way to fight a war. "OK, everyone stand still in a big group and.... fire... (at the other bunch standing in a big group...)." Great picture - and I'm a Brit. (Ooops, should I have mentioned that...?[reply]Steve Marshall @ July 6, 2009, 3:48 am
Yes crazed method of fighting....... especially as they all had cannon and other slightly more heavy duty weapons that could take out whole groups of soldiers in one hit.. if they stand together in the open.... mind you those cannons were still proving their worth against stray Brits...... i was supposed to stay 75 feet back from the cannon when they were to be fired...... but hey it wasn't clear to me when they were going to be fired...... so at the vital moment I was only about 10 feet back...... it was pretty loud I nearly had a heart attack..... gave me a bit of a shock anyway...... hehehe.......
