New research published today shows an 18 year life expectancy gap between the richer parts and the poorer parts of the city of Sheffield in the North of England.........
As Justin Webb on BBC Radio 4's Today program said this morning at 8-50 "thats extraordinary" ........ just as I was thinking the same thing..........
Professor Danny Dorling of Sheffield University who lead the research team claimed his figures showed increasing polarization in the city neighborhoods ......... in the 1960's the life expectancy for those living in the whole of Yorkshire was pretty well the same.......
Now you are 30% more likely to die before the age of 60 if you live in a poor area of the city than if you live in rural Yorkshire or one of the smarter areas of the city of Sheffield. The richer neighborhoods have showed the highest increase in life expectancy since the 60's while the poorer areas of population have shown much smaller increase in life expectancy ........... Depressing stuff.
Last time I was in Sheffield I shot this above image......... of joyriders........ youngsters who steal and drive cars recklessly for thrills ........ often burning them after the crazy ride is over........
More depressing research from back when I shot this...... 10 years back .......... This particular poor area of Sheffield was said at the time to be statistically the worst place in Europe to park your car.
Don't tell me, you finally went after Adobe...just kidding.
Jez, for me it's more frightening than extraordinary as I am not surprised by this continued bifurcation between those who do and don't have. It looks like Sheffield has a lot more to worry about than a nuclear bomb (Remember the movie "Threads" back in the early 80s?). This growing division is global and I am convinced that it may become more marked in the coming years as the economy "recovers" for some leaving many others behind. A trend that started back as early as the 80s.[reply]Luis @ November 2, 2009, 10:44 pm
I feel like burning an Adobe guys car....... still have not had time to get the computer sorted out...... I only bought the new copy of PS as I didn't have time to work out why the old versions we owned that were sent FTP were not working ......... so it's particularly galling to spend an eye watering amount of money and be back where you were all along ....... totally F...d up by Adobe......... don't get me goin....... Im shooting again today...... maybe I will have time to sort it out........ but I doubt it.......
You r right though...... half this stuff looks pretty OK without photo shop..... I've been resizing stuff in photo mechanic my editing software you literally cannot adjust the pics in that at all... just resize...... if only there was something else other than PS..... I would dump Adobe stuff....... after all this crap I don't feel they should have any of my money again....... after they have completely stuffed you up you r supposed to pay them like nothing has happened .... no discount not even a note of explanation or apology from Adobe...... I now know why it does not work and it is Adobes fault..... but I have only found this out from others...... Adobe has not responded ....... sickening.
Don't get me goin..............
On to real things.........
'Extraordinary' is not it really...... you are right........ depressing outrageous vile unfair wrong ...... would be more correct........
The Prof himself doing the research said he thought the recession would bring further hardship and life expectancy division increase..... so worse to come.......
He also said the poorest districts suffered more and much longer than other districts during pervious recessions ...... in fact they never really recovered from the 80's recessions.........
10 years.... and it gets worse. Depressing. How do we figure out what would make a difference? You have tried by telling this story... politicians have tried.... the city is great (loads of regeneration)...and the people are too... (car burners apart...). I hope Luis is wrong but suspect he will be proved right.
Meanwhile.... nighttime loitering in Hackney parks might take some explaining.... [reply]Steve Marshall @ November 3, 2009, 5:19 am
Even the unemployed car burners were not bad through and through....... I was able to hang with them and be accepted by them to some degree as they sought status and adventure through deviant and criminal behavior ........ I felt sad for them then....... as I feel sad and angry for them now hearing of how an increasingly divided polarized society means literally death for the poor of their city........ fundamentally its just not right.......

So keep doing what you believe in...keep the faith, man... Hey, I have a (very) long range plan for a photo-voice type project in Sheffield. If it ever gets off the ground you might find we need you for a day or 2...?[reply]Steve Marshall @ November 3, 2009, 6:37 am
Sounds very interesting I would love to do something like that...... :-))
Its a true shame after twelve years of Labour Government that we still haven't got to grips with this stuff..too much time wasted on soundbites and cosying up to fat cat types in the city..I felt so optimistic back in 1997..just a wasted opportunity..[reply]The Guerilla of Geek xx @ November 3, 2009, 9:42 am
