I went out for a beer this evening with me old mate Kevin Toolis........ its been a while............ like 10 years or something crazy........ since I last saw him he has made a ton of mega award winning documentaries....... he was a writer with Night and Day when I worked with him....... a specialist in the Troubles of Northern Ireland where I worked with him last...... he had written the highly acclaimed "Rebel Hearts' a journey's within the soul of the IRA ........ he was firmly a writer in my view....... but its true he had already made the odd documentary I think.......... but since I last saw him he's become this mega award winning film maker.................. which is very cool........ but surprisingly other than that......... he is completely and utterly unchanged......... so we could just pick up where we left off....... :-))
Kevin is not specializing in the IRA so much these days........... but he has not left the terrorism completely........ In fact he has not left terrorism at all.......... he has been seriously delving in the world of terror............He gave me a couple of DVD's........ of some of the mega stuff he has been working on during these cheery days of the 'War on Terror' ....... 'The Cult of the Suicide Bomber' and 'Car Bomb' the deadliest weapon of the 20th Century........ the latter I had certainly seen advertised heavily in the US....... decided to watch it...... then somehow did not got round to it........ without even realizing Kevin was the director....... so now I have a couple of heavy duty films to watch :-/ :-) :-)) and more freakishly a Hezbollah key ring ...... which is a great thing to receive as a bizarre joke gift from your old mate while having a beer in Soho House. Lets face it...... Its weird to have the new Hezbollah key ring anyway but especially without even having gone to Lebanon recently.
The image above is of a Hamas youth who was training with others at a kind of paramilitary Hamas scout troop in a mosque in Gaza....... they were practicing with Knives and other weapons and learning kung fu to attack Israeli soldiers...... they all said their ambition was to become a suicide bomber.
Hey Jez.... The beauty of this picture scares the living daylights out of me... Seriously challenging... This is A-level 'hanging'...;-)))
Seems like our (well, my...) Western Mind can't figure this kind of concept - 'I want to be a suicide bomber...' - the ultimate (for them) in honour and respect - and the worst kind of terror for us... mmmm... us/them - won't help...;-\
I need to have a look at the films - I'm running a dialogue workshop in Jan where we talk a lot about Brendan Duddy the IRA/British Forces intermediary (who actually ran a chip-shop while working for peace) and some of the work by the musician Daniel Barenboim who has campaigned for peace in the middle East.
Maybe I'll show this picture as the 'ultimate challenge' for dialogue...??? ;-))
Suicide bombing is for me the most disgusting, depressing concept and tactic..... and of course nothing could be more counter productive in terms of winning any kind of settlement based on a compromise...... but that of course was never the aim of Hamas...... they are "from the river to the sea is Islamic land" types......... sadly the tactic of suicide bombing led directly to the creation of the security barrier the huge wall separating the Palestinians from Israel but also annexing bits of the West Bank to Israel and leaving Palestinians further isolated and more impoverished ..........
That Yale professor that I shared your work with the other day has a new book out "Justice: Rights and Wrongs" which addresses this very topic. In his book he argues against a Kantian "reason based" approach to human rights (which is the current popular approach and which is creating a kind of Apartheid for the Palestinians) and instead for a "respect/worth" based approach to human rights. Brilliant, brilliant man. His new book is wonderful. He also serves as the head of an organization in the USA called Palestine Human Rights Campaign.[reply]Lynda @ November 24, 2009, 11:43 am
Don't take that Hezbollah car ring back to New York whatever you do..[reply]Watfords wine expert xx @ November 24, 2009, 11:56 am
Yes I did think that myself........ in the US of A you can get the chair for ever once having a Tamil Tigers calander on your wall (even if it was a joke)...... or having a photo printed in the UK's Communist Party Weakly (correct spelling)....... or if you have shook hands with Gerry Adams (IRA Army Council Chief)...... er...... oh no Gerry Adams is more of a freedom fighter than a terrorist in the US....... what was I thinking...... but if you had ever chatted to Jack Kill Salman Rusdieby(nice beard whats that strapped to your body) or had been on holiday in Yemen(why would anyone do that? Unless they were interested in ancient bottling techniques and the extraction of the stopper by suction?) or had say a Hezbollah key ring ( a friend gave it me as a joke)..... on your way to JFK...... you could find yourself landing in Egypt to answer a few friendly questions and test the conductivity of your testicles...... before returning to NYC to get the chair.........[reply]Whine Taster General @ November 24, 2009, 4:50 pm
